# Use your own web address

Serve your Documarium site at your own address, like docs.yourcompany.com, by adding one record where you bought the address.

You set it up once. We handle the security certificate and renew it for you. Your own address needs a plan that includes it, as the [pricing page](https://documarium.com/#pricing) shows.

## Before you begin

- Know the address you want, for example docs.yourcompany.com.
- Be able to sign in where you bought the address, such as Cloudflare, Namecheap or GoDaddy. We call that company your provider.

## Steps

1. Open the domain page for your site in Documarium and type the address you want.
2. We give you one record to copy. It has a name, a type and a value.
3. Sign in to your provider and add that record.
4. Close the page and get on with your day. We check every minute for the first day, then once a day for a week, and we email you when it is ready.

For an address with a word in front, such as `docs.yourcompany.com`, `help.yourcompany.com` or `www.yourcompany.com`, the record looks like this:

| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
| docs | CNAME | origin.documarium.com |

Most providers ask for the name on its own, as `docs`. A few ask for the whole address. Both mean the same record.

## If your address has nothing in front

An address such as yourcompany.com, with nothing in front, cannot use a CNAME record. That is a rule of the naming system itself. Your provider may offer one of these instead, and you need only one:

| Name | Type | Value |
|---|---|---|
| @ | ALIAS | origin.documarium.com |
| @ | ANAME | origin.documarium.com |
| @ | CNAME, flattened | origin.documarium.com |

| Provider | Address with nothing in front? | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare | Yes | Add a CNAME on @. It is flattened for you |
| Namecheap | Yes | "ALIAS Record" in Advanced DNS |
| Porkbun | Yes | "ALIAS" in the record type list |
| Gandi | Yes | "ALIAS" in the DNS records editor |
| DNSimple | Yes | "ALIAS" in the record list |
| DigitalOcean | Yes | "CNAME" on @ works there |
| Route 53 | No | Use www and forward the address to it |
| GoDaddy | No | Use www and forward the address to it |
| Squarespace Domains | No | Use www and forward the address to it |
| Wix | No | Use www and forward the address to it |
| Hover | No | Use www and forward the address to it |

If your provider is not listed, look for ALIAS, ANAME or "CNAME flattening". If none of those words appear, use `www.yourcompany.com` and have your provider send the bare address there.

## When it is ready

Your documentation answers at your address, and readers who use the old address are sent to the new one. The certificate renews on its own. We do not change records for you: your address stays at your provider, under your account.

If it is not working after a day, the [troubleshooting page](https://docs.documarium.com/help/troubleshooting/) lists the usual causes.
