A GitBook alternative for a small team

Documarium is a GitBook alternative where each editor changes your docs site from their own Claude account, with no price per member on Team and above.

GitBook stays the better choice if you want a visual editor in the browser, single sign-on or an interactive API reference.

Prepared by Documarium. GitBook facts come from GitBook's own pages, listed with the dates we read them under Sources.

The short answer

  • Choose Documarium if your editors already use Claude and you would rather they stay there than learn a new editor. On Team, your bill doesn't move when you hire.
  • Stay on GitBook if you want a visual editor, Git Sync with GitHub or GitLab, single sign-on, an API playground, or reader-facing AI on your site.

What changes for the people who edit

How the price grows with people

GitBook bills every member, whatever their role. In GitBook's words: "Access permissions don't affect member pricing — guests and readers cost the same as other members." (GitBook billing FAQ, read 2026-10-27). Its pricing page lists a price per site plus a price per user; see GitBook's pricing page for today's figures.

Documarium's Team plan has one price for the site, with no price per member. Starter and Solo are single-editor plans; how many editors each plan allows is on the Documarium pricing page.

Readers of a published site pay nothing on either. Your own web address needs a paid plan on both: Essential and up on GitBook, Solo and up on Documarium.

Taking your content out

GitBook syncs your content to a GitHub or GitLab repository on every plan, and offers PDF export on paid plans. On Documarium, the site's owner exports every page as plain text files from Export in the sidebar, on every plan and after you stop paying, with no repository needed. Either way, the export is your content, not a working website: you would host it yourself.

Where GitBook is ahead

  • Free publishing. GitBook's Free plan publishes a site for one user. Publishing on Documarium needs a plan.
  • Single sign-on, a visual editor, Git Sync, an API playground and reader-facing AI. Documarium has none of these, and nothing for teams that do not use Claude.

Moving over

  1. Open documarium.com/start and choose Docs online. Give it the address of your public GitBook site's home page, then choose which pages Claude writes.
  2. Add Documarium to Claude and paste the prompt the start page gives you.
  3. Claude reads your docs, drafts the pages you chose and gives you a preview link to check before you keep it. It drafts new pages from what it reads rather than copying your GitBook site page for page, so check each one. You do not need an account for the preview. Anyone with the link can open the preview while it lasts; it isn't private.
