GitBook vs Mintlify pricing for a small team

A hosted docs site that Claude edits and publishes costs $0 on Mintlify until the sixth editor, then $5,400 a year. GitBook starts at $924 a year on your own address and adds $144 for each member. Documarium is $139 a year for any number of editors.

The short answer

  • Up to five people: Mintlify Starter is free. It publishes on your own address, includes up to five editor seats, and Claude can publish to it through Mintlify's admin MCP server. What Starter leaves out is a preview link you can share and a one-step undo of the live site; Mintlify sells those on Pro and Enterprise. Documarium costs $39 a year for one editor on your own address, and $139 a year for a team.
  • From the sixth person, Mintlify means Pro: $450 a month billed annually, or $5,400 a year. Documarium's Team plan stays at $139 a year, with any number of editors.
  • GitBook charges per site and per member, the first member included. With your own address, one person on Essential costs $924 a year, five people $1,500 and ten people $2,220. GitBook's Free plan has one member and no custom domain.
  • Documarium: write for free, publish from $9 a year. Writing and previews are free. Publishing starts with Starter, on a documarium.com address.

Prepared by Documarium. GitBook and Mintlify prices were read on each company's own pages on 2026-11-03, and four points were checked by hand on test accounts the same day; each is marked. Prices change, so check each pricing page before you buy. All prices are in US dollars.

Yearly cost by number of editors

The job: a hosted docs site on your own web address that Claude can edit and publish, for one to twelve editors. Each product's least expensive plan that does the job, billed annually.

Editors12345681012
Documarium (Solo, then Team)$39$139$139$139$139$139$139$139$139
GitBook Essential$924$1,068$1,212$1,356$1,500$1,644$1,932$2,220$2,508
Mintlify (Starter, then Pro)$0$0$0$0$0$5,400$5,400$5,400$5,400

Watch the sixth editor. Adding one moves Mintlify from $0 to $5,400 a year, adds $144 a year on GitBook, and adds nothing on Documarium Team.

How the rows are worked out:

  • Documarium. Solo ($39 a year) has one editor and your own address. Team ($139 a year, or $19 a month) has any number of editors.
  • GitBook Essential. $65 a month for the site plus $12 a month for each member, billed annually: $924 a year for one person, and $144 a year more for each person after that [1][2].
  • Mintlify. Starter is $0 with up to five editor seats and a custom domain. A sixth seat means Pro, $450 a month billed annually [3].

Publishing from Claude, plan by plan

All three products let Claude change your docs. What differs is which plan lets a change go live without a step in the vendor's app.

PlanClaude can writeClaude can publish
Documarium FreeYes, with a preview linkNo; publishing needs a plan
Documarium Starter and upYes, with a preview linkYes
GitBook FreeYes, through GitBook's MCP server, which is on every plan [1]Not on its own: in our test, each change waited for someone to approve the merge in the GitBook app
GitBook Essential and upYesYes; we have not tested whether paid plans also hold changes for approval
Mintlify StarterYes, through Mintlify's admin MCP server [4]Yes. Mintlify's MCP page names no plan; we confirmed on a Starter account that it publishes
Mintlify ProYesYes

Where Mintlify Starter stops

Mintlify Starter costs $0, and for many teams that settles it. Here is what it leaves out, and what Documarium does instead.

JobDocumariumMintlify Starter
Show a change to someone before it goes liveEvery change gets a preview link anyone can open, on every plan, Free includedIn our test, Starter's Preview button showed the change only inside Mintlify's editor, with no link to share. Preview deployments are on Pro and up [3]
Undo a published changePut the whole site, or single pages, back to any kept version in one step from Claude, on every paid planIn our test, each page was restored one at a time from its version history and then published again. Instant rollbacks are on Enterprise [3]
Remove the vendor's badgeFrom Solo, $39 a yearWhite labeling is on Enterprise [3]
Get your money back30-day money-back guarantee on every plan"All Fees paid are non-refundable" [5]

GitBook has preview links and version history on every plan, Free included [1], so against GitBook these are even.

What else changes the bill

  • Who counts as a member. GitBook bills every member of your organization, whatever their role: "guests and readers cost the same as other members" [2]. People who only read your published site are not billed. Mintlify Starter allows up to five editor seats; Pro has unlimited seats [3]. Documarium's Team plan and up have no price per editor.
  • Each editor's own Claude account. On Documarium, every editor uses their own Claude account, which Documarium does not bill for. Claude's free plan works, with its own usage limits.
  • Refunds. Documarium has a 30-day money-back guarantee on every plan. GitBook: "As per the terms of service, GitBook does not offer refunds." [1]
  • The badge. Documarium removes its badge from Solo up. GitBook says it is not possible to remove the "Powered by GitBook" link [6].

What the higher prices pay for

GitBook and Mintlify sell a broader product, and part of the gap pays for it:

  • A visual editor in the browser and sync with GitHub or GitLab, for people who do not use Claude.
  • Interactive API reference pages with a playground.
  • An AI assistant for readers of the published site, and their own writing agents (GitBook Agent on every plan; Mintlify's agent on Pro).
  • SOC 2 certification on both, and analytics on Mintlify Pro.

Documarium has none of these. It hosts written pages, such as guides, help and policies, that someone keeps current from Claude. If you need an API playground or a browser editor, see A Mintlify alternative for a small team and A GitBook alternative for a small team.

How we compared

We priced one job: a hosted docs site on your own web address that Claude can edit and publish. For each editor count we took each product's least expensive plan that does the job, billed annually. GitBook and Mintlify facts come from their own public pages, read on 2026-11-03. Four points were checked by hand on test accounts on 2026-11-03: that GitBook Free holds changes made from Claude for approval in its app, that Mintlify's admin MCP server publishes on Starter, and how Mintlify Starter's preview and page restore work. Both accounts were in a vendor trial at the time. We will re-read every competitor page by 2026-11-27.
